Mystical Landscapes

2016
immersive art experience
Art Gallery of Ontario

Commissioned by the Art Gallery of Ontario to transform Walker Court into an immersive experience that surrounded their VIP Gala guests in a unique reimagining of the main works by Van Gogh and Monet at the galleries Mystical Landscapes exhibit.
Using machine learning, first an analyzes of the brush strokes, colour pallets and compositions of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Monet’s Les Nymphéas. Second a digital image composition. One of the Toronto skyline another of the Toronto Botanical Garden as a base to apply the machine learning to. Third, a full laser scan of Walker Court. This point cloud was turned into a 3D model, the canvas for these unique pieces.
Using a gaming engine, physics were added to the scenes to further augment them with movement in the water, reflections in the lake, dynamic shining stars and the elegant subtle swaying of fauna. Finally 3D mapping the artwork to the real world architecture via a 12 projector blend. The results, one of a kind pieces in the uncanny style of Van Gogh and Monet which surrounded guests as they moved through this immersive environment.
